Abstract:

Fifteen castor (Ricinus communis L.) genotypes were evaluated in the field during kharif-2013for physiological efficiency and yield potential of different spike orders. Among 15 genotypes, 12 genotypes are from CRIDA castor germplasm viz., CRC-1 to CRC-12 and three genotypes 48-1, DCH-519, DCS-107 were obtained from DOR, Hyderabad. The observations on photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (Tr) were recorded during 50% flowering of primaries (59DAS). The Pn values of genotypes was non-significant. However the selected castor genotypes recorded significant differences for gs, Tr and WUE. The gs values ranged from 0.41(DCH-519) to 1.07 cm/s, Tr was 6.42 (DCH-519) to 13.58 mmol H2O/ m2/s and WUE was 2.29 to 5.87 μmol CO2/ mmol H2O/ m2/s. It is very conspicuous to observe that the gs has linear relation with Tr (R2= 0.93) and WUE (R2= 0.90) where as it was non-linear with Pn. The seed yield of the castor genotypes ranged from 32 to 74 g/pl (CRC-2). The high yielding genotype CRC-2 has better gs, Tr and WUE with low Pn values. This genotype showed a consistent performance across all the three spike orders. The genotype DCH-519 was susceptible to Botrytis infection at maturity of second and third order spikes and could not record better yield though it was best for physiological parameters. This is clearly revealing that the castor genotypes for rainfed condition need to have low gs values and resistance to Botrytis infection.
