Abstract:

Turmeric grows wild in the Forests of South Asia. It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of ginger family. The Antioxidant activity of turmeric is due toa group of polyphenolic compounds. This polyphenolic compound is extracted by solvent extraction and called as curcuminoids. Usually turmeric contains 5% of curcuminoids.It contain curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxy curcumin. Column chromatography is the only technique for separating the curcuminoids. It is a commercially viable technics. Turmeric used in food colouring, cosmetics, textiles and medicines.

Arunkumar T.C has completed his Post Graduate from M.G University, Kerala. He had eight years of experience in Neutraceutical Products. Currently he is working as a Scientist In Synthite Industries Limited, kerala.
