Abstract:

Background: Educational efficacy is inclined by the instructional design including skill learning, deliberate practice, mentoring, feedback, evaluation, and other advanced educational approaches. Hence, enhancing instructional design with different innovative approaches can improve educational outcomes Objective: The present study aimed to apply a pedagogy to the knowledge, skill, and self-efficacy of pediatric nurses regarding neonatal resuscitation, and compare its effectiveness with the conventional method of learning. Methods: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted between November 2021 to April 2022. Sixty-five nurses were randomly allocated to groups A and B. Group A was learned through the conventional method (2-hour Didactic lecture + 1-hour simulation). Group B learned through pedagogical steps including 2-hour lectures, video (30 minutes), and simulation (1 hour), clinical (6 hours), and peer learning sessions (1 hour). The outcomes including knowledge, skill, and self-efficacy were measured two times, before and after the intervention through blind assessors in a simulated delivery room. Masking of data assessment was provided by assigning a specific code to each student. Results: Overall, the knowledge, skill, and self-efficacy were significantly (p < 0.001) improved in both groups after intervention. Yet, the results showed that the post-test mean change in knowledge and skill was significantly higher (p < 0.001) compared to group A with an insignificant difference in mean self-efficacy level. Conclusion: Education through pedagogy was found more effective in enhancing knowledge, skill, and self-efficacy compared to the conventional method. The results of this study support the efficacy of the pedagogy in the skill learning of neonatal resuscitation in a resource-limited setting.
