Abstract:

Palliative Care (PC) is just a beginning to take shape in Armenia and there a little information about it to get a general overview and spread in the sphere, as well as just a few short-term training courses (1-week). The main problem is that the majority has no clear understanding of PC, its mission and methodology. Little attention is paid for proper promotion and dissemination of information about PC, which cultivates a wrong percept that, PC is only watching someone die. Whist it differs drastically from the true mission of PC. Low level of interest hinders its proper adoption in the country. PC is a direction in medicine which is an indispensable constituent in any department because PC should be perceived as a high-quality care and in high demand everywhere and training course in this field will benefit patients in the first place. The purpose of this study is to provide local training courses in the medical institution I am affiliated with. Regular meetings with subsequent follow up hands-on experience of the knowledge gained. After several training sessions, perception of PC is substantially improved: less alienation and negative attitude, a different focus on the patient and psychological aspect. Methods used in PC found their application in practice and it has been acknowledged by patients. The quality of care is improved.
