Influence of some herbal extracts on the occupational lung disease

Abstract:

Occupational lung disease includes the professional asthma, pneumoconiosis, and different allergies determined by long exposure to different chemical agents. Unfortunately, untreated lung disease leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and death. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective activity of some herbal extracts (such as chamomile - Matricaria chamomilla, elder flowers - Sambucus nigra, yarrow - Achillea millefolium, marigold - Calendula officinalis, and three faces in a hood �?? Viola tricolor) and to assessed the dependency between the amount consumed weekly by the workers from regional coal industry (the West-side of Romania) and the determined parameters. All the patients which were exposed to coal dust and crystalline silica for prolonged periods present modified spirometry parameters (FVC, FEV1 and FEV1%) and biochemical variables (creatinine, albumin, urea, GSH, ALT and AST). Data was compiled using: (i) a semi-structured questionnaire via face-to-face interviews with patients of Occupational Medicine Department between 2013 and 2015 (n=31); (ii) their spirometry parameters and (iii) their biochemical variables. The obtained results indicate that chamomile and yarrow are both effective against the changes of spirometry parameters when the amount consumed weekly was more than 0.25 g dried herb/kg and the three faces in a hood is effective against the modification of biochemical variables when the amount consumed weekly was more than 0.10 g dried herb/kg.
