Abstract:

In according to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), until 2060 aproximmately one third of population will be composed by older 60 years people. The age pyramid inversion awakens special care to the future: the elderly health. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) relates to Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) to evaluate the association with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The results of 20 years of analysis were associated with older age, smoking history, diabetes disease and hypertension. As we get older, structural changes are related: heart walls become thicker and heart chamber increases in size. As a consequence, heart failure can be reported. Moreover, older hearts do not beat the same way; at rest, the cardiac frequency in elderly is lower when compared to young people and does not increase proportionally during exercise practice. The elastic tissue from heart also gets older. In consequence, the blood vessels become hardened, contributing to high blood pressure. The diabetes is another important condition related to hearth condition: in according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 80% type II diabetes patients come to death due to cardiac complications. Another relevant factor is the smoking habit: increases changes in vascular system, harming the coagulation cascade, contributing to the maintenance of damage. In addition to medicines, the medical team needs to play an essential role for a better elderly condition life: encourage to keep an active life. The exercise practice helps to mantain the health heart and prolongs life expectancy. So, keep away from sedentary lifestyle may be the best medicine for elderly health.
