Abstract:

The Indonesian central government and the Jakarta authority have developed a reclamation planning to build 17 artificial islands in the Jakarta Bay. The development of these islands is not only damaging the environment of the sea and its coastal areas, but also destroying the livelihoods of local fishermen living nearby. One of the fishing areas which could suffer from this development is Muara Angke settlement. The Jakarta local government has even evicted many inhabitants of this settlement and demolished their dwellings. As happened in the past, this area would again be built for commercial facilities, which is in turn will be provided for the rich people with their luxurious houses surrounded the seaside of the Jakarta Bay. This paper discusses the current and future physical as well as social problems facing the fisherman due to the reclamation development by the local government.
