Biography

Shunyuan Xiao is an associate professor of the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research, and the Department of Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture, University of Maryland College Park. He received his bachelor (1984), master (1987) and doctor degree (1992) in plant genetics from Huazhong (Central China) Agricultural University. After  postdoctoral research at University of Florida and University of East Anglia, UK, he joined the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute as an assistant professor in 2003.

Research Interest

The long-term goal of Dr. Xiao′s research is to understand the molecular basis of plant innate immunity and engineer broad-spectrum and durable disease resistance in crop plants.  Current research in his lab is focused on understanding how the broad-spectrum resistance protein RPW8 directs defence to the host-pathogen interface and on engineering interface-focused resistance by using RPW8 as a delivery vehicle.
