Biography
Dr. Sunil Wimalawansa is currently affiliated to Chief of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Nutrition, and expert in endocrinology, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, vitamin D, and nutrition, continuing research in the specialized scientific area of Endocrinology, Osteoporosis and Metabolic bone disease, Vitamin D, and Nutrition. Dr. Sunil Wimalawansa is serving as an honorary reviewer for Journal of Food Processing & Technology & other reputed journals and has authored several articles along with chapters in different books related to Endocrinology, Osteoporosis and Metabolic bone disease, Vitamin D, and Nutrition, He has made several seminal contributions to medicine, medical research, and pharmaceuticals. These include development of novel modes of treating osteoporosis, including nitroglycerine, once-a-week bisphosphonates therapy (1995), combination therapies, and a technique to enhance the efficacy of bisphosphonates, and cost-effective therapies, such as nitric oxide donor treatment regimens (e.g., topical nitroglycerine and oral nitrates) for treating osteoporosis (1987) and vitamin E (1997). In 1984, he was the first to develop the intra-operative hormone assays using measurements of calcitonin and parathyroid hormones as examples to assist endocrine surgical procedures, which is now used worldwide as a standard of practice, helping thousands of endocrine surgeons and patients. He also developed a highly cost-effective water purification method, applicable worldwide, to provide clean potable water to needy populations. He is a multiple award-winner, including young investigator awards from several professional societies, Dr. Boy Frame Award for Clinical Excellence in Metabolic Bone Diseases, American Endocrine Society Glen Foundation Awards, and an innovation award from the Asian Chamber of Commerce. He received a coveted Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to medicine, science, humanity, and society. Recognizing his humanitarian contributions, ISCD awarded him, 2007 Dr. Oscar Gluck International Humanitarian Award.
