Adolescent Psychiatry is the branch that specializes in the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of thinking, feeling and/or behavior affecting children, adolescents and their families. The adolescent psychiatrist uses the knowledge of biological, psychological, and social factors in working with patients. The adolescent psychiatrist makes a diagnosis based on the pattern of behavior and emotional symptoms, using a standardized set of diagnostic criteria such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).
