Biography

Dr. Kumar has more than 12 years of research experience in veterinary virology. Following completion of his PhD, Dr. Kumar joined as a postdoc at Emory University Atlanta, USA (2006-2011) where he worked on interaction of influenza virus with host cell signaling pathways. Currently he is holding the position of Senior Scientist at Veterinary Type Culture Collection (VTCC), Hisar, India and is primarily responsible for authentication and accessioning of viruses of animal origin. His main area of research is to develop antiviral agents against some acute viral pathogens of animals such as peste des petits rumiannts virus (PPRV) and capripoxviruses. His laboratory is involved in identifying some novel cellular targets that are required for viral replication but are, at the same time dispensable for the host. The strategy will lead to a paradigm changes in antiviral drug development in terms of drug resistance, as virus can not easily replace the missing cellular functions by mutations. He is also interested in studying the antimicrobial properties of the nanoparticles and natural products.
