Prof. Albena Momchilova has received her PhD in the Institute of Biophysics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1986. Currently, she is working as Professor of Biophysics at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She has successfully completed her Administrative responsibilities as Deputy Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering. At present she chairs the Scientific Council of the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering. She is the Head of Department “Lipid-protein interactions in biological membranes”. Her research has included investigations on the lateral and transversal heterogeneity of the membrane lipids in cells under normal and pathological conditions. She has published articles on the effect of oxidative stress and antioxidant protection on the formation and stability of membrane microdomains, the latter being considered as “cellular signaling platforms, in peer-reviewed journals. She has performed studies on lipid metabolism, enzymes responsible for modulation and maintenance of the phospholipid and fatty acid composition and sphingomyelin signaling in membranes of cells cultured in three-dimensional matrix.
