Biography

Prof. Addicam Jagannadha Rao, received his Ph.D in Biochemistry from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore – 560 012, India, in 1971. Currently he is working as INSA Senior Scientist in Indian Institute of Science. He has successfully completed his Administrative responsibilities as professor at the Department of Biochemistry, IISc. from 1982 to July 2004 and Emeritus Scientist from 2004 to-date. Did post doctoral work at University of California, Hormone Research Laboratory and at University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke Canada, Department of Biochemistry. His research has included using cells from human placenta and cells from rat testis and rat epididymis demonstrated that the tropic hormones such as FSH, LH, GnRH, and Estradiol 17 exert differential action depending on the stage of differentiation of these cells. It was also demonstrated that Estradiol 17 has an important role in sperm maturation and by interfering with the action of Estradiol 17 at the epididymal level, sperm maturation can be interfered and thus block male fertility. Has shown that administration of extremely low doses of a testosterone derivative namely 7-methyl-19-nor testosterone results in blockade of fertility in the adult male bonnet monkey. Based on this research and fellowship training he has received several awards and honors, such as: ICMR award 1991; Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA, U.S.A DBT short term Research Scientist 1991; M. Sreenivasayya Memorial Award 1992; Rockefeller Foundation Biotechnology Career Development Award 1986-1992; INSA, MRN Prasad Memorial Lecture 2004 ; ESICON, Dr. Subhash Mukherjee Memorial Oration Award 2007 ; SRBMCE, Chennai, Scroll of Honor 2008 ; NIRRH, Mumbai, Shanta S. Rao Memorial Oration 2009; ISSRF Gold Medal, 2010. He is serving as an editorial member of several reputed journals like The Open Andrology; World Journal of Diabetes; Austin Journal of Reproductive Medicine & Infertility. and expert Reviewers for journals like reproductive biomedicine online(U.K). He has authored 162 research articles and 2 research books. He is a member of Endocrine Society, USA; Society for Study of reproduction, USA; Society for Biological chemists, India and Fellows of NASI 99; INSA 2000; NAMS 2009; * Sr. Assoc.: National Institute of Advanced Studies *Vice-President: Society of Biological Chemists, India.
