Abstract:

Background: There are varieties of factors that cause complications or even total failure of the dental implant treatment. Several factors can cause treatment failure happen including incorrect positioning, insufficient bone density or volume, overloading, damage to surrounding tissues, external force/sudden impact, fractured implants or even a reaction to anesthesia. To categorize complications; we have treatment plan related complications such as: wrong angulation, improper implant location; anatomy related complications such as: nerve injury, sinus perforation, cortical bone perforation and procedure related complications. The first two can be prevented via pre-operative implant assessment using conventional and advanced imaging modalities. Several of these causes are described and discussed during this lecture. Objective: This lecture reviews the reasons concerning the success or failure of dental implants and provides the general dentist with information through advanced imaging modalities to decide whether to recommend dental implant to a patient. Conclusion: Major implant placement issues can be avoided by using diagnostic information offered by imaging technologies, which provides 3D assessments of alveolar ridges before a surgical intervention.
