Abstract:

Osteopenia of prematurity is increasing worldwide due to improved outcome and survival of extreme preterm infants. However, its prevalence is difficult to predict due to different methodologies used. Prematurity along with intrauterine growth retardation is the most important predictor of this condition. Although, high alkaline phosphatase above 900 IU/L after six weeks of age along with low phosphate is an important sensitive indicator of OOP. There is no consensus on the screening guidelines, prevention as well as management of osteopenia of prematurity. Management of OOP is challenging as it is quite difficult to match intrauterine calcium and phosphorus replacement due to a variety of factors. We will be discussing some of important related issues.
