Treatment of Complicated Crown Fracture Using Fiber Reinforced Composite Post: A Case Report

Abstract:

Traumatic dental injury is the most common problem following dental caries in primary and permanent dentition. This type of injury includes cracked or fractured enamel; fractured, luxated, or avulsed dentin; and trauma to supporting tissues. Furthermore, it leads to esthetic, functional, and psychological problems for the patient. This case report describes a complicated crown fracture treatment using a fiber reinforced composite post for a female. A 14-year-old girl was admitted to the pediatric dental department, complaining of a traumatic dental injury to her anterior teeth one month after experiencing a fall. Clinical examination showed a complicated crown fracture in the maxillary right central incisor and uncomplicated crown fractures in the maxillary left central incisor. Radiographic examination showed that both maxillary central incisors had a periapical radiolucent lesion. After preparation to access the cavity for each tooth, calcium hydroxide was used as an intracanal dressing. Then, once both teeth were asymptomatic, each root canal was filled with gutta-percha, and a fiber reinforced post was placed in the root canal of the maxillary right central incisor. Each tooth was restored with composite resin. In conclusion, anterior crown fractures are an injury that often affects children. While assessing treatment options, practitioners should consider the remaining hard dental tissues, as well as the patient?s esthetic and functional expectations for the treated tooth or teeth.

Dr. �zlem Mart? Akg�n is currently appointed as a Specialist doctor, Pediatric Dentistry Department, Central of Dental Sciences, Gulhane Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey. She obtained her medical degree at Ege University, in 2001. She underwent her residency training in Pediatric Dentistry in 2007 to 2011 at Gulhane Medical Academy, Ankara, Turkey. She is now a DDS, Ph.D. in there. She serves as a clinician in pediatric dentistry, and a clinical educator for PH.D students, and fellows.
