Abstract:

Small-scale tropical fisheries are responsible for providing a relative high diversity of fish. These fish will be shown here through examples of Brazilian small-scale fisheries from the Atlantic forest coast and from some Amazonian riverine fishers. Many of these fish are threatened, such as the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). In the Amazon riverine fisheries, there is no knowledge on many fish species. Small-scale fisheries have some features, such as local scale extraction; dispersion of fishers or fishing communities; local rules; lack of data on species; local ecological knowledge (LEK) and intrinsic local dependency of the extractors, often made up by poor households. In this talk, besides information brought about the Atlantic coast and the Amazon, I will provide some examples of the context of the fishery co-management of Central American fisheries as well as of the Pacific Chilean shellfish fisheries.
