Abstract:

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis on the osseointegration of endosseous dental implants throughout bone density measurements. Material & Methods: The present study was performed on twelve postmenopausal females; six of them were diagnosed as osteoporotic according to the Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometery (DEXA) others were normal patients. Each patient was a candidate for single or multiple tooth replacement in the maxillary arch. Direct digital radiography was performed at the intervals of immediately after implant installation, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. This is to determine bone density around installed implants. Results: The bone density measurement at base line, after 3 and 6 months (mesial and distal to the implants) of normal group showed statistically significantly higher values than the osteoporotic group. Despite the expected higher values of normal group, yet the percentage changes in bone density for the two groups was equivalent as there was no statistically significant difference between mean percentage changes of the two groups after 3 and 6 months. Conclusion: Low bone density scores of osteoporotic female patients as quantified by DEXA scores does not affect osseointegration rate of dental implants.

Mahmoud Mohsen El-Arini was graduated in 2003, masters in 2009 and received PHD in 2013. He Works as a lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Future University, Cairo, Egypt. He has a private practice in which I enjoys Oral Surgery as well as Dental Implantation.
