Prevalence and associated risk factors of Entamoeba gingivialis and Trichomonas tenax among patients with gingivitis in Western Iran

Abstract:

Introduction & Aim: Gingivitis is considered as a common and mild form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness and inflammation in gingiva. The aim of this study is designed to evaluate the prevalence of Entamoeba gingivialis and Trichomonas tenax in patients with gingivitis from Lorestan Province, Iran.

Methods: This cross-sectional survey was carried out on 164 patients with gingivitis from Lorestan Province, Iran during June to December 2018. The samples (saliva and dental plaque) after collection were smeared on a glass slide and in next step using Giemsa stain were stained; finally by means of a light microscope were tested. A prepared questionnaire considering a number of data such as age, gender, use of toothbrush, etc. were provided by each patient.

Results: Among the 164 patients with gingivitis, these parasites were found in 43 (26.2%) patients including 23 (14.2%) patients for E. gingivialis, 20 (12.2%) patients for T. tenax. The obtained findings demonstrated that although there was no significant relationship between, age, education, residence, smoking and the prevalence of E. gingivalis and T. tenax among the patients with gingivitis; however there was a significant association between gender as well as mouthwash and teeth brushing with the prevalence of E. gingivalis and T. tenax (p<0.001).

Conclusion: The results showed the considerable prevalence of E. gingivalis and T. tenax in patients with gingivitis in Lorestan Province, Iran, exhibited that E. gingivalis and T. tenax can probably related to the progress of gingivitis. On the other hand, attention to oral health standards, mostly brushing and use of mouthwashes could protect people from expose with these parasites.
