Abstract:

Cranial defects occur among from a wide variety of causes like trauma, pathologies and adjunct surgical corrections which may jeopardize the brain indicating a interdisciplinary secondary reconstructions by maxillofacial prosthodontics and neurosurgery. Cranioplasty is a reconstruction of cranial defect using bone graft or an implant material. This technique is by osteoplastic reconstruction or restoration using alloplastic implant material like titanium, tantalum, non metals like PMMA, Hydroxyapetite, Scilicons etc. An impression of the affected site is taken using elastic/elastomeric impression material and the prepared model is scanned for the fabrication of implant prosthesis which is then fixed intracranially by a neurosurgeon and a prosthodontist. During healing the scalp will grow into the perforations of the cranial implant prosthesis providing sound protection, cosmetic appeal for the patient. I would like to document a series of cranioplasty cases which were done through novel interdisciplinary neuroprosthetic therapy in the Department of Prosthodontics, Govt. Dental College and Dept. of Neurosurgery, Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India respectively, showing excellent result and good prognosis after a period of 1 year of follow up.
