Junior cliniciansâ?? proficiency in oral surgery as basis for a proposed pre-clinical laboratory component

Abstract:

This research assessed the junior clinicians�?? proficiency in oral surgery. The respondents (n=40) were enrolled on the Second Semester, school year 2017-2018. A researcher-made questionnaire was prepared to obtain relevant data. The researcher-made questionnaire was validated by three experts and a professor in dentistry. Revisions were made on the questionnaire following the recommendations of the experts who validated it. Before the research implementation, a pilot study was conducted in the same dental institution. Later, the researcher made questionnaire underwent reliability testing using Cronbach�??s alpha. Percentage, weighted mean, Chi-square and t-test were used for the statistical treatment. The results of the study showed that there was no significant relationship between the students�?? profile and their clinical skills in oral surgery. However, profile such as GWA of pre-requisite subjects presented a significant relationship with clinical skills. Also, there was a significant relationship between the respondents�?? academic status and their clinical skills in oral surgery in terms of preoperative, extraction and post-operative procedures. There was also a significant difference in clinical skills in oral surgery of the junior clinicians�?? as rated by their clinical instructors and by themselves. A laboratory component in the form of syllabus, instructional guide and laboratory manual, which could improve the clinical skills in oral surgery, was proposed based on the results of the study.
