Evaluation of acceptability and chewing time of six dental chews in dogs: A randomized, blinded control trial

Abstract:

Chewing helps clean the mouth by mechanically disrupting the plaque and by stimulating flow of saliva. This study compared the acceptability and the chewing time of dental chews for dogs. Dogs received 1 chew per day for 6 days in a blinded, cross-over and randomized manner (P1=Veggiedent Fresh, Virbac; P2=Dental care chews, Hill�??s; P3=Dentastix, Pedigree; P4=Oravet, Merial; P5=Prozym RF2 stick, Ceva; P6=Greenies dental treats, Mars). Three criteria were noted for each dog: Prehension (no/in the hand/on the floor), consumption (no/partial/total consumption) and consumption time (in seconds). Acceptability was defined as total chew consumption. Products were compared using a Student T-test (consumption time), or a Chi2 test (prehension rate and acceptability) (α=0.05). Each chew was offered to 36 to 38 dogs depending on group allocation. The prehension rate was similar for the 6 products, between 97% (P2, P5, P6) and 100% (P1, P3, P4). P1, P2, P3 and P6 had statistically significant higher percentage of acceptability than P5 (p<0.05) (P1 to P6: 92%, 94%, 97%, 86%, 76%, 92%, respectively). P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 had a longer consumption time than P6 (P<0.001) (means (sec)=242, 291, 253, 228, 272 and 141, respectively). No side effects were observed. Globally, the 6 products were similar in terms of prehension. P5 had a lower level of acceptability than the other 5 products and P6 a shorter consumption time.

Celine Nicolas has completed his graduation in Veterinary Medicine and PhD from the University of Nantes in France. She has then worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow and Research Assistant at the University of Bristol in UK for 5 years and at the University of Nice in France for 2 years. She has published a dozen articles in reputed journals and joined Virbac Medical Department in 2016.
