Current Practices in Multimodal Pain Management Following Major Surgery: A Survey from Germany

Abstract:

Background: Multimodal analgesia has become the standard approach for postoperative pain management, minimizing opioid use while improving patient recovery and satisfaction.

Objective: To investigate current multimodal analgesia practices among anesthesiologists in Germany. Method: A nationwide survey was conducted among hospital-based anesthesiologists using a structured electronic questionnaire assessing analgesic techniques, clinical preferences, and perceived outcomes.

Result: Seventy-six percent routinely practiced multimodal analgesia. Sixty-eight percent reported reduced opioidrelated complications, while 80% observed improved patient satisfaction with postoperative pain management.

Conclusion: Multimodal analgesia is well established in Germany. Continued research and standardized institutional guidelines may further optimize postoperative pain management.
