Abstract:

The replacement of missing teeth with implant-supported prostheses is a well-documented and predictable treatment method. High survival rates of both implants and implant-supported prostheses have been reported. However, both clinicians and patients should be aware that a significant number of patients treated with dental implants will experience a complication within the first 5 years. With the growth of implant therapy, the number of complications may be expected to increase in the future. Therefore, the diagnosis, management and prevention of implant-related complications are important issues to consider as part of everyday practice. Complications can be categorized as either biologic or hardware in nature. This presentation will focus on only the biologic complications. In this presentation the author will cover the topics on how to distinguish between a biologic and a hardware complication; how different medications affect implant therapy and; the affects different medical conditions have on implant therapy. drsap@verizon.net
