Oral white lesions are commonly encountered on the oral mucosa and constitute much concern to the dentist and the patient alike.Oral white lesions may be a simple reactive lesion, constituting little risk (e.g. frictional keratosis), to a potentially malignant lesion (e.g. idiopathic leukoplakia) to the notorioussquamous cell carcinoma.Infection with Candida species (thrush), viral infections (hairy leukoplakia) and congenital and developmental anomalies (e.g. hairy tongue, Fordyce?s granules, leukodema etc.) and some dermatologic disease (e.g. oral lichen planus) may present clinically as a white lesion.The aim of this presentation is to increase the awareness of the general dental practitioners of the principles of diagnosis and management of common oral white lesions, when to treat and when to refer to the concern specialist.
