Abstract:

Ultrasonography (US) is being currently used in imaging of various head and neck pathologies owing to its non-invasive nature, easy availability and relative cost effectiveness and has gained wider acceptance in maxillofacial imaging as it gives real-time tomographic images with cross sectional information. With the advent of novel improved versions of equipment, color-doppler and three-dimensional (3D) and four dimensional (4D) US craniomaxillofacial anomalies can be diagnosed prenatally, including congenital tumors, facial clefts (cleft lip and cleft palate), syndromes (trisomy 21), craniosynostosis, acrocephaly, oral tumors (ranula), agnathia, micrognathia, retrognathia, tongue (aglossia, macroglossia) nose (nasal cleft, dermoid cyst), eyes (cataract, hypertelorism, hypotelorism) and ear (low set ears) abnormalities and other developmental abnormalities. Understanding the natural course of these congenital abnormalities allows the experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon to work in an interdisciplinary fashion to provide care to this new population of patients because early detection is early prevention and cure. This poster aims to highlight the notable advances and endeavors made in the technique of ultrasound and its various contributions in prenatal diagnosis of various oral and craniofacial defects so that a multidisciplinary team is prepared in advance to manage the defect as early as possible resulting in little or no suffering by patients.
