Coastal regions are among the most dynamic environments on Earth, supporting diverse ecosystems, economic activities, transportation networks, tourism facilities, and residential settlements. These areas experience continuous interaction between land and sea, resulting in natural changes that influence shoreline position and coastal stability. Rising populations, expanding infrastructure, climate-related changes, and increasing pressure on coastal resources have created significant challenges for managing shorelines effectively. In response to these concerns, Shoreline Management Plans have become an important component of coastal management systems, providing structured approaches for addressing environmental, social, and economic considerations along coastlines.
A Shoreline Management Plan is a long-term strategy designed to guide decisions regarding coastal protection, erosion control, flood risk reduction, and environmental conservation. Rather than focusing on short-term solutions, these plans evaluate coastal processes over extended periods and identify suitable actions that align with local conditions and future needs. The primary objective is to achieve a balance between human activities and natural coastal dynamics while reducing potential risks associated with shoreline change.
Shoreline Management Plans commonly categorize coastal areas according to different policy options. In some locations, maintaining existing coastal defenses may be considered appropriate where valuable infrastructure, urban centers, or economic assets are present.
