Biography

William Anthony (Billy) Wiltshire qualified as a dentist with the BChD degree after which he completed his BChD (Honors) with Dental Biomaterials as his major (cum laude). His first Masters degree, the M.Dent in Restorative Dentistry was awarded, also cum laude for his in vitro and in vivo work on Resin Bonded Bridges. Next, he completed the 4-year full time specialty Master’s degree in Orthodontics, receiving the MChD(Orth). In 1995, he was awarded a Doctorate in Science, the DSc(Odont) for his research work and thesis on “Restorative and Orthodontic Perspectives of Clinical Dentistry.”
Academically, Professor Wiltshire served as Professor and Head of the Department of Orthodontics and Chief Specialist at the University of Pretoria until 1997. Dr. Wiltshire subsequently took the exams of Royal College of Dentists of Canada and attained Fellowship in Orthodontics in the Royal College. He is also a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy . Dr Wiltshire currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Preventive Dental Science (Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Community Dentistry and the Center for Community of Oral Health), Head of Orthodontics and Graduate Orthodontic Program Director at the University of Manitoba. He is recipient of several fellowships and awards including the Colgate Palmolive Research travel award of the IADR, the Elida – Gibbs research award, Julius Staz Scholarship, Alexander Foundation award in orthodontics as well as teaching awards for both undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. He was recipient of the Coors Biomedical Prosthodontic award of the IADR for his work on surface treatments of base metal alloys for Resin-bonded bridges.
Dr Wiltshire is author or co-author of over 200 peer– reviewed publications and abstracts, his publications and their translations appear in 6 different languages. He has lectured extensively world wide and has been involved in research with funding in excess of $1 million. His research interests are in orthopaedic growth modification, orthodontic biomaterials, epidemiology of malocclusion, interceptive orthodontics, early treatment and educational research in orthodontics.

Dr Wiltshire maintains an active limited orthodontic private, working with colleagues in a multi- disciplinary environment.
