Biography
Dr. Silvana Barros completed her DDS from University of Campinas(Brazil) in 1986 and her Ph.D in Biological Sciences from University of Campinas (Brazil) in 1995. At present, She is Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Dentistry. She is the Co-PI of a number of research projects/grants and author-co-author of a number of articles related to oral health care.
Research Interest
The overall interest of the laboratory is to investigate the interferences and exposures that underlie the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases and the link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, preterm low birthweight infants and diabetes.
My current research seeks to understand the role of epigenetics in periodontal disease and the consequences of infectious exposures in utero to human health in development throughout life.
