Biography

Dr. Janet Brewer is a legal scholar and researcher who serves as Director of the Institute for Indigenous People’s Rights, a non-profit corporation dedicated to research and education as to the impact of biotechnological advancements upon indigenous people and culture.  Dr. Brewer previously taught law at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom where she served as a member of the Institute for Law, Economics & Global Governance, the Institute of Medicine, Law & Bioethics, and the Center for Social Ethics & Policy. She is admitted to practice law in the U.S. state of Illinois.

Research Interest

International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBGs), interdependent issues of drug discovery especially within the developing world; Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP), genetic research involving socially-identifiable populations, ownership rights and informed consent of collectivist cultures involved in biomedical research; patents and pharmaceutical access in the developing world; Constitutional challenges, such as privacy rights, and emerging biotechnology.
