Biography

Tiziano Zarra joined the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Salerno in 2006, after earning his MSc degree with honors in Civil Engineering, and his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering. From 2008 dr. Zarra is Referee of the Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED) Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Salerno and from 2009 of the Olfactometric Laboratory at the SEED Research Centre. Dr. Zarra is an expert in environmental odour characterization and control, with research interests focused especially on the subjects of odour impact assessment, development of novel instruments for continuous monitoring (e.g. electronic noses), identification of integrated approach to assess odour annoyance and characterization of odour emissions from different industrial activities with direct and indirect methods (OEC, odour emission capacity). Since 2015 he is member of the CEN/TC264 ‘Air Quality’, WG2 and WG41, that deals with the revision of the EN 13725 standard and with the identification of a standard to define the use of electronic sensors for ambient odour monitoring. In addition to the topics noted above, Dr. Zarra has published research on control of fouling in wastewater, monitoring of river water quality, environmental impact assessment (EIA), strategic environmental assessment (SEA), non-conventional statistical methods for environmental monitoring, sustainable development and environmental management systems according to ISO 14001, drinking water quality degradation assessment in water systems and control of odour in drinking water. He was expert of the European Union from 2013 in the seventh Framework Program for Research (FP7-people-COFUND program 2013-2018). Since 2003 he supports didactic activities at Department of Civil Engineering at University of Salerno. He is the senior researcher of several national and international research projects and referee of Erasmus agreements. Dr. Zarra was visiting scientist at different foreign research institution where he collaborated with high-ranking professor; the most significant experiences were developed at University of Stuttgart (Germany). Dr. Zarra has published almost hundred refereed publications in ISI journals, congress proceedings and written an international handbook on Odour Impact Assessment (Wiley, 2013); he have 1 patent on novel odour measurement chamber for electronic nose (e.Nose) application.
