Biography

Dr Brian Shepherd’s primary areas of research include fish endocrinology and environmental physiology Dr Shepherd received his BA degree in zoology from the University of Hawaii in 1990 and his PhD in zoology from the University of Hawaii in 1997 His PhD work focused on characterizing the hormones that control growth and osmoregulation in tilapia After his PhD work he started a USDA postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Connecticut 19922000 wherein he studied the molecular endocrinology of growth in channel catfish rainbow trout and tilapia In 2000 Dr Shepherd was recruited to the University of Kentucky School of Biological Sciences as an assistant professor. During his time as faculty at UK he served on several graduate student committees in addition to serving as the primary advisor for 3 students who completed their Masters degree and 1 student who completed a PhD degree Dr Shepherd started with the Agricultural Research Service/USDA National Center for Cool and Cold Water Aquaculture NCCCWA in 2004 as a research physiologist At present Dr Shepherd is the research physiologist and lead scientist with the ARS/USDA program to “Combat Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia and Improving Yellow Perch Aquaculture for the Great Lakes Region” which is located at the Great Lakes WATER Institute Milwaukee WI Dr Shepherd’s current research emphasis is directed at understanding estrogendependent growth in yellow perch Dr Shepherd also holds an appointment as an adjunct associate professor with the Department of Biology at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Dr Shepherd has served as a panel member and reviewer for prominent funding agencies NSF SeaGrant USDA and BARD and currently serves a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal “Marine Biotechnology” and ad hoc reviewer for several other peer reviewed journals.
