Abstract

Comb like polymeric surfactants based on Acrylic combs and ethoxylates bristles

Polymeric Surfactants have many uses because of its polymeric comb like structure. The comb base tether with the particles and bristles of the comb containing the ethoxylates help to pull the particles to the water and deliver great properties like stability of particle dispersion, like organic pigment dispersions, which is not achieved by non-polymeric surfactants. Synthesis of such polymer is a two-step process. The preparation of the comb base, the first step, which in our case is the preparation of an acrylic copolymer, which contains a hydoxy acrylate monomer and a simple acrylic monomer. The molecular weight is kept at around 10-25 thousand. The second step is ethoxylating this acrylate polymer having pendant hydroxyl group. We have results of polymeric surfactants with various ethoxylation degrees and its effect on organic pigment dispersions. Also compared are commercially available polymeric surfactants produced by other methods but with similar chemistries as regards their effects on organic pigment dispersion. The chemical characterisation of the polymer prepared in the novel way is also reported.
