Cell Therapy for Diabetes

Diabetes is a clinical syndrome characterised by a chronic state of elevated levels of glucose in the blood. The disease is caused by destruction of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading to loss of control of blood glucose levels. Restoration of functioning beta cells is a priority, as it would effectively constitute a cure of diabetes which would be achieved by transplantation of beta cell grafts prepared in the laboratory from donor human, animal cells, stem cells or regeneration of beta cells in patient's own pancreas. Stem cells hold tremendous potential as a source of insulin-producing cells that could be placed in a BioHub. That’s because stem cells have the potential to become virtually any kind of cell.
