Biography

Dr. Jesus M. Banales received his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Navarra in 2006. Currently, he is working as Head of the Liver Diseases Group at the Biodonostia Research Health Institute (Donostia University Hospital) in San Sebastian (Basque Country, Spain). He has successfully completed his Administrative responsibilities as postdoctoral fellow at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA: 2006-2008) and as Investigator at the Foundation for Applied Medical Research (FIMA) of the University of Navarra (2008-2012). In 2012, he joined the Biodonostia Institute. Currently, he is also: (1) Principal Investigator of the Spanish Network of Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd), (2) Principal Investigator of IKERBASQUE (Basque Foundation for Science), (3) Assistant Professor of Sciences at the University of Navarra (Spain: since 2009), (4) Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic (USA: since 2010), and (5) Assistant Professor of Public and Private University accredited by the national agency for assessment and accreditation (ANECA: since 2011). His research includes the study of hepato-biliary pathophysiology, mainly focus on liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), polycystic liver diseases (PCLDs), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). At the molecular level, he is studying the role of microRNA, bile acids, extracellular microvesicles and developmental transcription factors in all of these pathologies and also at the physiological level. Based on this research and fellowship training he has received several awards and honors, such as: - “Sheila Sherlock Award” from the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in 2010. - “Young Investigator Award on Oncology” from the Spanish Association Against the Cancer (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, AECC) in 2012. - “Young Investigator Award” from IKERBASQUE (Basque Foundation for Science) in June 2012. He is inventor of 2 international patents, have presented 45 abstracts in national and international meetings, and published 38 manuscripts in top international journals (27 original, 8 reviews and 3 book chapters). He has supervised 5 PhD dissertations, 3 Master’s projects, and is currently supervising the doctoral dissertation of 5 PhD students. He has been invited lecturer in19 international academic, scientific and medical Institutions (USA, China, Italy, The Netherlands, Austria, Colombia..). He is reviewer for journals like “Hepatology”, ““Trends in Molecular Medicine”- Cell Press”, “Journal of Pathology”, “Cell Communication & Signaling”, “Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular Basis of Disease”, “Plos One”, “World Journal of Gastroenterology”, “Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry”, “Medical Science Monitor”, etc.. He is a member of: 1) Ciber of Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd), funded by the Spanish Carlos III Heath Institute, since 2006; 2) European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), since 2009; 3) American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), since 2010; 4) IKERBASQUE (Basque Foundation for Scince): since 2012; 5) Spanish Research Group in Extracellular Vesicles (GEIVEX), since 2014.

Research Interest
