Abstract:

There are many therapies that have been popular in treating alcohol and drug addictions. In this article, the author describes Sookshma- Self Compassion Healing Meditation Therapy as an approach that can assure greater success in the recovery process and sustainence of abstinence. Sookshma therapy utilizes self acceptance, self love and self compassion as its foundation in the self healing process. The ancient program is unique that apart from meditation, it also involves subtle simple physical movements/exercises to release tension/stress in the body, breathing exercises that build muscle of concentration and finally the meditation practice for self-awareness and self-regulation. There is emphasis on smile as an object of concentration during the entire practice which aids in instant relaxation and being mindful. Meditation practice is done in the lying down position to help complete relaxation of the body contrary to the sitting position that can be distractive. These practices help participants build self-confidence and constant integrated awareness so that they could handle the triggers and withdrawal anxiety with ease. The role of self compassion and smile have been found very effective in overcoming the need to be self judgemental and self critical. The biggest hurdle in many mindfullness practices is the inability of participants to start the practice because of the very wavery nature of the mind. Sookshma exercises takes a round about approach by taming the body and emotions, before getting to the mind. It takes it a step further to de-stress body and mind and also energizes the system inside out. Participants have reported instant benefit and ability to apply these practices in their day to day life at work or home in overcoming the urges and sensations. Application of Sookshma meditation in other mental illness have shown increased resilience and relaxation in trauma. More case studies are reviewed to access this ancient wellness model.
