Abstract:

UV cross-linked sulphonated polysulfone cation exchange membrane with degree of sulfonation of 60%, owning distinct three-dimensional network structure due to containing additives with different number of acrylate groups were prepared via UV irradiation and tape casting in a self-made mold. Addition of crosslinkers increases the density and smoothen the membrane surface, especially with the number of acrylate groups increasing, improving anti-swelling property significantly, not at the expense of sulfonic acid groups. Actually, addition of dipentaerythritol penta-/hexa-acrylate achieves the idealized swell ration at 2.15% at 250C, which is suitable in higher temperature. Besides, the impact of synthesis sequence between crosslinking and evaporating solvent on membrane performance was investigated. Excellent electrochemical performance of crosslinked membranes compared to the uncross-linked indicating that adjusting structure in membranes has important potential in electrodialysis applications.
