Abstract:

Orthognathic surgery has, over the years, gained a generalized acceptance for correction of dentofacial deformity. However, there are limitations associated with acute advancement of osteotomized bone segmentssuch as relapse. DIstractionosteogenesisis a novel surgical technique that involves bone lengthening by gradual mechanical distraction and has opened up new possibilities in the correction of dentofacial deformities. The purpose of this presentation is to review development of this technique and highlight its clinical applications to the oro-facial region by presenting a series of cases treated with this approach.

Biography :

Pratik Sharma works as Hospital consultant / Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthodontics at the Royal London Hospital Dental Institute / Queen Mary?s School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, United Kingdom. He is the training program director for the Postgraduate orthodontic program and is the module lead for the undergraduate orthodontic curriculum. He is in involved in treating patients presenting with complex malocclusions including those presenting with dento-facial deformity. He is actively involved in conducting and supervising research projects within the orthodontic department.Dr Sharma has published numerous articles in peer - reviewed journals and presented his research at national and international orthodontic conferences and meetings. He has been invited to give a number of lectures at national orthodontic meetings. He is an active member of the British and European Orthodontic Societies
