Abstract:

Periodontal diseases comprise a variety of conditions affecting the health of the periodontium. Although many studies have documented the effect of different risk factors on the development of periodontal diseases, only few studies have evaluated the effect of the presence of risk factors on the response to non-surgical periodontal therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of clinical risk factors on the clinical outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy. Periodontal clinical parameters were recorded for patients with periodontal disease attending Kuwait University Dental Center, at examination visit prior to periodontal therapy and at reevaluation stage, including; plaque score, bleeding score, clinical attachment level. Clinical data from a total of 800 patients with chronic periodontitis were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were pregnancy, orthodontic treatment and history of antibiotic treatment. The 800 patients were grouped according to severity of periodontal disease: 158 patients with mild chronic periodontitis; 306 patients with moderate chronic periodontitis and; 336 patients with severe chronic periodontitis. There was significant improvement in all the clinical parameters among all study groups following initial periodontal therapy (p<0.005). In logistic regression analysis, low plaque score and bleeding on probing score were the only factors associated with successful completion of non-surgical periodontal therapy.
