Abstract:

Revolutionary changes in petroleum industry require a revolutionary solution. This therefore, encourages research on biomaterials as drilling fluids additives such as non-toxic viscosity builder and fluid loss control additives. These biomaterials must be environmentally friendly, possess good mud properties, cost effective and commercially available. This is because drilling fluid is a major engine part of every successful drilling operation. A major factor influencing the encouragement of this study into biomaterials as drilling fluid additives is the growing concern for environmental safety and consequently environmental regulations which is the increasing demand on the oil and gas industries by environmental agencies, agents of governments and host communities of operations. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the degree of effectiveness of biomaterials as drilling additives during oil and gas well drilling operations. This is then compared with the existing ones as controls. These suitability factors of biomaterials are obtained through laboratory measurements carried out according to American Petroleum Institute Standard. And their results compared favorably very well for oil and gas well drilling operations with the existing ones. Their major advantages over the existing ones are their environmental friendliness and optimum cost per bag or bbl.
