Abstract:

Background: The extraction of impacted third molars semi¬-presents little controversy when associated with pathological changes such as infections, unrecoverable carious lesions, cysts, tumors and destruction of adjacent teeth and bone. However, the justification for prophylactic removal of these third molars is less certain and has been debated for many years. The importance of microorganisms septicemia, septic embolization and bacterial endocarditis. Objective: To study the presence of Candida spp. in semi-retained third molars. Materials & Methods: 150 patients with semi-retained third molars were studied in different positions: mesioangular (n=50), distoangular (n=50) and vertical (n=50). Radiographic study of analog panoramic technique was performed. Buccal mucosa samples were taken with a swab and placed in a test tube with saline solution. And subgingival samples in the third molar with Gracey type were placed in tubes with saline solution. Were performed simultaneously extended coloring with Gram technique and Giemsa. Conventional microbiological tests were performed. Statistical data analysis (Chi Square) with an alpha error of 0.05 (95%) and a power of 80% was conducted. Results: The difference was statistically significant (p=0.02) in the bearing of Candida spp. between mesioangular third molars and the other two positions. The buccal mucosa did not show statistically significant differences in the different positions. In mesioangulares, it was found more than one species of Candida in each molar. The prevalence of Candida in decreasing order was C. albicans, Candida dubliniensis followed, C. glabrata, tropical Candida and Candida krusei. Conclusions: Patients with third molars semi - retained are carriers of Candida spp.
