Abstract:

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a globally recognized fundamental health concern and a basic human right. But it is poorly addressed and seldom well researched into. Author of this work is of the considered view that sexual health and reproductive health of unwed women and girls is another area of concern that has not been addressed adequately by the stakeholders in the health sector. Disregarding this aspect of health creates various obstacles to accessing SRH related services and education. This threatens the sexual & reproductive health of unwed women (and girls). Some of undesirable health consequences are connected with [1] probability of unplanned pregnancies (and resulting unsafe abortions), [2] augmenting the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections, and [3] most importantly, increasing the hazard of maternal and neonatal death. This study primarily aims to investigate into sexual health and reproductive health issues of unwed women and girls. Also, it offers viable solutions to address the concern areas. This research relies on secondary data (primarily ‘qualitative’), and method of analysis is ‘descriptive’. The paper briefly concludes that sexual health and reproductive health concerns of unwed women and girls should be addressed through formal & non-formal channels (streams) of education. Family life education (FLE) is key for adequately addressing the sexual & reproductive health concerns among unwed women & girls.
