Sclerotherapy of intraoral hemangioma: A case report

Abstract:

Hemangioma is a benign vascular anomaly which characterized proliferation of blood vessels. Although some hypothesis etiology of hemangioma is unknown Hemangioma are three-five times more occurs in females than in males and they affect most frequently in head and neck regions with ratio of 40-60%. Diagnosis of hemangioma can be achieved with history of patient and clinical examinations which palpation and diascopy. Treatment modalities include medical therapy, surgical excision, embolization, laser therapy, cauterization, cryotherapy, radiotherapy, sclerotherapy, systemic or local corticosteroid, radio frequency ablation and resection. The case study begins with a 27 years old woman applied the clinic of oral and maxillofacial surgery department at Abant Izzet Baysal University complaining of an intraoral lesion in the left side of cheek. In clinical examination, by observing approximately 1x1cm purple, soft lesion in palpation, the submucosal hemangioma and diagnosis confirmed by ponction test. It was decided to be treated by sclerotherapy and polidocanol (Aethoxysklerol) was implementing four times through 14 days. In the control way, treatment was continued for a month and the lesion totally disappeared. There are various treatment methods depending on type, stage, location symptoms, and deformity of lesion and cost of treatment in treatment of hemangioma. Every treatment methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Sclerotherapy is the first treatment chose for many symptomatic venous malformations. These treatments firstly conservative, safe and cheap and it has other advantages such as patients can be treated in outpatient and it can be very effective without bleeding.
