Abstract:

Immunological changes due to pregnancy may alter the susceptibility of pregnant woman and the fetus to certain infectious diseases and increase the risk of more serious outcomes. Inactivated vaccines are generally safe in pregnancy. Reactions following vaccination with inactivated vaccines are usually to the injection site, no increase in anaphylactic reactions or events that might induce preterm labor has been observed. Among 305 pregnant women that were immunized at Federal Medical Center, Owerri, level of evidence of vaccine safety were observed among 298 pregnant women while 7 pregnant women indicated injection abscess on site of immunization. It showed that level of evidence on inactivated vaccines were more on meningococcal vaccines, Tetanus toxoid vaccines, Tdap vaccines and yellow fever vaccines.
