Abstract:

High turnover and non-retention among hospital staff has become widespread in the last few years and especially so in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Undoubtedly this is in part due to the historical and ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in what many consider a mass exodus of healthcare workers. One such unit effected by this is the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, where this project will take place under the supervision of Dr Carl Horsley. As part of an applied research-based project in health leadership, the challenge of addressing retention and turnover in the ICU will be accomplished in partnership with the University of Auckland. Aspects of literature analysis, stakeholder review, complex adaptive systems thinking, implementation science, and reflection will be explored. The presentation subsequently will include a complex evidence-based understanding of the problem including drivers, perpetuating & attenuating factors, key stakeholders, timelines, and costs.
