The presentation will focus on the nursing management and strategies in the respiratory care of neonates. An in-depth discussion on the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) as the initial mode of respiratory support in critically ill very low birth weight infants will be presented. The presentation will elaborate on the use of CPAP and its association with a lower incidence of chronic lung disease and how it supports the role of nasal CPAP in facilitating weaning from mechanical ventilation and reducing lung injury. Discussion on how nasal CPAP success rates is widely variable and may be attributable to how well it is utilized and how it is essential to evaluate strategies for success that are dependent on using correct CPAP devices, attention to detail and caregiver experience. The presentation will also include the nursing care and management of newborns that are mechanical ventilated and the nursing strategies to prevent unplanned extubations.
Sylvia Villaraza Morales has been the Unit-Based Neonatal Intensive Care Educator at Morgan Stanley Childrenā??s Hospital since 2018. In this role, she focuses on providing support and fostering the professional development of neonatal nurses. With over 30 years of experience in a Level IV NICU, she possesses extensive knowledge in the care and management of newborns requiring nasal CPAP. She specializes in caring for high-risk neonates, premature infants, and babies with complex and critical conditions. Sylvia is certified in Neonatal Nursing and is also a certified Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) instructor.
