Agglomeration methods of builder production for synthetic detergents (SDs), in particular, by the dry neutralization of proton containing reagents (acid solutions) with solid alkaline substances in their high excess are widely used. There is limited information about the chemistry of the processes taking place during the dry neutralization although this method has the practical and scientific interest. The aim of the work is to study the composition and properties of the products formed after the dry neutralization of the acids by sodium carbonate. The sulfuric, phosphoric, citric and acetic acid is used as initial acids. Builders are produced by spraying of acid solution on powdered Na2CO3 and intensive mixing. The Na2CO3/HxAn and H2O/ Na2CO3 molar ratios equal to 2â??6 and 1â??4, respectively. It is shown that the synthesis products consist of carbonate-containing compounds (Na2CO3â?¢NaHCO3â?¢2H2O, Na2CO3â?¢nH2O, n=1.7 and NaHCO3) and hydrated salts of the corresponding acids. It is noted that by the changing of HxAn type we can regulate the content of crystal water in the composition of the salts of the corresponding acids and the water content in the builder. Effect of the acid strength on Na2CO3â?¢NaHCO3â?¢2H2O yield is established. Probably formation of Na2CO3â?¢NaHCO3â?¢2H2O occurs as a consequence of its crystallization by super-saturation in the liquid phase covering the sodium carbonate solids and the structural transformation of the primary crystal lattice of Na2CO3 by substituting of Na+ by H+. It is shown that the products of the dry neutralization consist of particles larger than 100μm, have a bulk density of 0.7â??1.0 gâ??cmâ??3, not caked (point hygroscopic 70â??75%), reduce total hardness of water to 0.5â??1.0 mmol-eqâ??lâ??1 and therefore may be used as builders for powdered SDs.
