Abstract:

Anxiety, Depression, and Stress are common mental health conditions reported by the elderly. Practices of Reiki represent one promising approach as an effective and feasible means to reduce Anxiety, Depression, and Stress, improve mental health, and promote well-being; however, there are no clinical trials that have combined psychometric assessments in a sample of elderly in the community. Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness of a Reiki therapy intervention in Anxiety, Depression, and Stress, among the elderly. Method: We conducted a randomized clinical trial among the elderly of a Primary Care Service. We compared a group that received the five-week Reiki therapy intervention with the waitlist group who received no intervention. Results: A total of 50 participants were included in the study, with n = 25 subjects in the intervention group and n = 25 in the control group. Anxiety, Depression, and Stress were significantly reduced after the intervention compared to the control group, which had no appreciable decline in the measured variables. Conclusion: This clinical trial showed the effectiveness of a Reiki therapy Intervention on mental health psychometric measures. It can be concluded that a five-week Reiki therapy intervention could be implemented as an effective strategy to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, improving the mental health of the elderly in the community.
