Abstract:

A n accumulating scientific evidence has identified certain systemic diseases, conditions, and behavioral factors that play important etiological roles in the development and perpetuation of periodontal disease. In addition, recent findings have provided compelling evidence regarding the impact of periodontal disease on the overall health of the individual. For example, periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis are two disease entities that have much in common and that the treatment of one disease enhances the treatment of the other. Patients who also are immunosuppressed and who have rheumatoid arthritis may be predisposed to failure of joints replacement prostheses due to subclinical infection resulting from bacteria originating in the dental microbial biofilm. Moreover, oral bacteria appears to participate in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.The results of these and other studies at Case Western Reserve University and their clinical implications for dental and medical practices will be presented.

Biography :

Nabil F Bissada is Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. He is the Director of the Postdoctoral Graduate Program in Periodontics at the School of Dental Medicine and also maintains a private practice in Cleveland Ohio. In addition to his BDS degree from Cairo University and DDS degree from Case Western Reserve University, he has MSD degree in Periodontics and also has a certificate in Oral Medicine and Oral Diagnosis from the University of Minnesota. He has authored and coauthored over 120 articles published in various peered journals and has lectured extensively at local National and International levels. His expertise is in prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. He also published numerous articles related to the link between periodontal diseases and systemic health in medical and dental journals
