Abstract:

A n accumulating scientific evidence has identified certain systemic diseases, conditions, and behavioral factors that play important etiological roles in the development and perpetuation of periodontal disease. In addition, recent findings have provided compelling evidence regarding the impact of periodontal disease on the overall health of the individual. For example, periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis are two disease entities that have much in common and that the treatment of one disease enhances the treatment of the other. Patients who also are immunosuppressed and who have rheumatoid arthritis may be predisposed to failure of joints replacement prostheses due to subclinical infection resulting from bacteria originating in the dental microbial biofilm. Moreover, oral bacteria appears to participate in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. The results of these and other studies at Case Western Reserve University and their clinical implications for dental and medical practices will be presented.
