Abstract:

Children with Juvenile Diabetes Mellitus undergo lot of psychological issues .The parents and the whole extended family as well under goes various psychological issues as they need to accept the new diagnosis , there will be change in family routines , financial constraints , etc. It takes time for them to adapt to all the changes that may happen within the child and in the family. Nurses play a vital role in working along with the team, in disclosure of the diagnosis, counseling the child and family, helping them to undergo various investigations and procedures, health educating them and ensuring that they adhere to the treatment regimen and protocols. As it’s a chronic disorder regular follow up is most essential. Coordinating the insulin, diet modifications and exercise stipulations is the most important function of the nurse specialist. Generally children face lot of challenges during the stage of growth and development which requires much attention from the parent, relatives, teachers, peers and the community, the child’s diagnosis with IDDM poses lot of stress and challenges. There are evidences where children with much input from the medical team and especially from the nurses can adapt to the challenges and can function normally with fullest potentials. This presentation will bring light on the psychological issues that may be faced by a child with IDDM.

Biography :

Mary Anbarasi Johnson working as a professor and Head in pediatric nursing department, CMC Vellore. She worked as Clinical Nurse Specialist in PICU for a year and as Assitanr Professor in USA for two years. She also worked in administration in nursing, in Saudi Arabia Defence Sector. CMC gave me opportunity to be Master trainer for International Projects like GFATM, IMNCI at national level as well national projects like ICMR Infection control, Child Sexual Abuse Protection, OSCE by Dr. MGR Medical University as well Diabetic Educators programme etc. She was very much interested in reviewing article have published in 70 national, international journals and presented in around 30 national and international conferences.
